May 16, 2017 Bob Gwin received a letter from Barbara Slater informing us of our member Thomas's passing last December. She also kindly inculuded a $75 donation to our association. His obituary from The Daily Freeman follows:
Thomas F. Slater of Napanoch, N.Y., passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016, after a long and courageous fight against cancer. He was 70 years old. Tom was born on Feb. 1, 1946 in Liberty, N.Y.; he was the son of the late Clem and Dorothy (Eck) Wright. Mr. Slater was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served aboard the USS Hampshire County. He was honorable discharged in 1969. Starting in 1972 Tom worked for the Town of Wawarsing Highway Department and worked his way up to foreman retiring in 2001. Tom was the type of person who couldn’t remain idle for very long. He became the Town of Wawarsing Highway Superintendant in 2004 and remained until 2007. Tom was an honorary member of the Napanoch Fire Department, the Kerhonkson VFW Post # 8959 and the United States Landing Ship, Tank (L.S.T.) Association. He was an avid fisherman and he also enjoyed building LEGO models and reading books. Tom is survived by his wife, Barbara (Rose) Slater and their daughter, Katelynn Slater; his former wife, Donna Slater, and their children Sean Slater and his wife Jennifer and Alyson Davis and her husband Ralph; his sister, Marie Smith and her husband Harry; his granddaughters, Taylor and Hunter Slater and Aryonna and Skyler Davis; his father and mother in-law, Robert and Fannie Rose all of Napanoch; sisters-in-law, Pat and Ed Hufnagel and Mary and Chuck Green; brothers-in-law, Rob and Laurel Rose and Art and Trisha Rose; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and many wonderful friends who helped support him on his journey of life. In addition to his parents Tom was predeceased by his brother Lee Wright. Memorial visitation will be held at Loucks Funeral Home, 79 N. Main St., Ellenville, from 4 to 7p.m. on Monday, Dec. 19, 2016, with a service beginning at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
